About this event:
We had a small group lesson on Roman Numerals today. After a discussion about who the Romans were, we looked at their number system. The students were familiar with I,V, and X because we have a clock that’s face has Roman numbers on it. They could count to 12 although they were viewing several of the numbers upside down because of the position on the round clock face.
We began counting and I introduced each new number as we went. We got to 1000 and they asked if we could go higher. I introduced 5000 and 10,000. We made numbers from Roman numerals to Arabic numerals and Arabic numerals from Roman numerals.
We also looked up the Latin words for one, five, ten, fifty, one hundred, five hundred, one thousand, and five thousand. It was a lot of fun and we will revisit this lesson on Monday!
