Crow and the Pitcher IMG_2954

Today the children gathered in the rock garden and enjoyed Aesop’s Fable “The Crow and the Pitcher. The fable tells the story of a crow who was terribly thirsty. The crow notices a bit of water at the bottom of a tall clay pitcher. His beak was too wide and the pitcher too thin to poke his thirsty tongue down in. He took a pebble in his beak and dropped it over the pitcher’s brim.  He dropped two more in. On and on he went. One by one the pebbles fell, slowly making the water swell until it was easily within reach of his thirsty tongue.

Each student had an opportunity to participate in the experiment by selecting a stone from the rock garden. The students quickly formed the hypothesis that if they dropped larger stones the water would swell quicker. The Fable suggests both a moral and science experimentation. The crow showed perserverance and problem solving skills. Your children so get the moral and the science behind the fable!
