“Today we talked about the digestive system and how it is a very long tube that runs through the body. We touched on how all the systems work together to keep us healthy and alive. We measured a length of clothesline to concretely illustrate its length. First we measured the approximate length of the mouth, esophagus and stomach (about 13″) then the approximate length of the small intestines (about 20′) and then the large intestines (about 5′). Then we curled the rope up as it might appear in the body on top of a student to see if it would all fit. It was awesome.
Earlier in the day we had a group lesson on Magnetic/Non-magnetic objects. The students enjoyed guessing which objects would jump up to the magnet and which would not. I also presented the sink/float work. Students guessed which objects would sink and which would float. These are works that can easily be made in your homes that encourage scientific reasoning and curiosity about the world around us.”
